Mild mood changes are common during the adolescent years, but more than a third of adolescents experience anxiety and/or depression that interferes with daily functioning. Routine and as-needed screening for depression with the PHQ-9 and for anxiety with the GAD-7 questionnaires should be part of routine adolescent care; abnormal screening results can prompt more detailed diagnostic evaluation. Most all clinicians caring for adolescents can provide cognitive behavioral therapy. A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor such as fluoxetine can be considered when symptoms of anxiety and depression significantly compromise daily functioning. Concerned about the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders, clinicians can advocate for more appropriate use (and appropriate restrictions) of social media.
