The Signs from Heaven

The calendars and ceremonies described in the previous chapters coordinated cyclical activities according to a stable rhythm. Even the capacocha (qhapaq hucha) was, at least in part, cyclical, since it was carried out on the occasion of the seizure of power by each Sapan Inca. However, extraordinary phenomena—such as appearances of comets or eclipses—disrupted the order of celestial clocks, announcing serious events out of the ordinary course of life. The conviction of a close cause-effect relationship between the phenomena in the sky and various events in human affairs was not alien to the Andean or the European culture of the time. The latter of these is summarized in these words of Nicollo Machiavelli:
