Cannabidiol for the Treatment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Focus on Schizophrenia and Autism
摘要
Schizophrenia (SCZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are distinct psychiatric neurodevelopmental diseases that share clinical features such as social and cognitive abnormalities. Current therapeutic approaches are limited and associated with serious side effects; thus, novel therapeutic approaches are needed. For instance, compounds targeting the endocannabinoid system (ECS) might correct the abnormal neurodevelopment preventing the onset of psychopathologies. Among these, cannabidiol (CBD) seems to show a potential therapeutic effect based on preclinical and clinical findings. The state of the art concerning the preclinical and human data in terms of behavioral, molecular, and functional impact of CBD treatment in SCZ and ASD is discussed in this chapter.
