Health Impacts of Floods: A Study of District Kasur, Pakistan

Flooding is one of the recurrent hydro-meteorological hazard in Pakistan leaving impact on human health at greater scale. Mainly it causes two types of impacts; direct impacts and in direct impacts. The purpose of this research is to determine the primary health issues that could be faced by population affected by floods in district Kasur especially by the flood of 2023. This study was done by a survey by different groups of team to the 14 medical camps and 6 mobile health units situated and working in flood affected areas, of DHA Kasur under the supervision of DDMA Kasur from 9th July 2023 to 2nd September 2023. Floods can have a wide range of health effects, depending on several variables. Floods’ immediate effects on health include 03 deaths due to drowning, 718 injuries, 33 hypothermia, and 19 animal bites (11 Snake Bite and 08 Dog Bite). After few days passed some indirect impacts of flood were seen like Fever 3133, Scabies 8936, and communicable diseases i.e. ARTI 5726, Dermatitis 529, Diarrhea 2438, Eye infection 1525, AWD 586, Dengue Malaria 133 and others 3615. The long term effects of flood like malnutrition due to starvation (one of the complication is immature baby birth or incomplete pregnancy), post disaster psychosocial distress and disability, may be experienced. The study concluded that floods have notable impacts on human life ranging from minor to major category. If the issue is left untreated or mismanaged consequences may be hilarious.
