José Goyanes Capdevila: Performed the First Vascular Bypass in History on 12 June 1906, Published in “El Siglo Médico”

Dr. José Goyanes Capdevila (1876–1964) was a Spanish surgeon and pioneer in vascular surgery, regional anesthesia, and oncology. He studied Medicine in Madrid and earned his doctorate with a thesis on thyroid surgery. Working with A. San Martin, his master in vascular surgery he served as Chief of Surgery at the General Hospital in Madrid and was the first director of the National Cancer Institute. He performed in 1906 in Madrid the first recorded femoro-popliteal bypass as treatment for a popliteal aneurysm. He also contributed to development of vascular surgery, arterial anaesthesia, arterial chemotherapy and developed surgical instruments. He was an academic, medical historian, and advocate for public health, notably through his report on Las Hurdes. He is recognised as one of the pioneers in vascular surgery.
