Antonio de Gimbernat: The First School of Surgery in Spain and His Contributions to Inguinal Anatomy

Antonio de Gimbernat y Arbós (1734–1816) was a prominent Spanish surgeon and anatomist. Born in Cambrils, he pursued his education in the University of Cervera and later at the prestigious Royal College of Surgery in Cádiz, where he excelled in anatomy. Mentored by Pedro Virgili, Gimbernat contributed significantly to the development of surgical techniques, particularly for femoral hernias, earning international recognition. He played a key role in establishing the Royal College of Surgery in Madrid and modernizing surgical education in Spain. His innovative methods and dedication to advancing medical knowledge left a lasting legacy. Despite his achievements, his final years were marked by financial hardship and declining health, passing away in Madrid in 1816.
