Medical oncology has undergone profound transformation from the late twentieth century to the present day, and Josep Baselga, an oncologist from Barcelona, played a pivotal role in this evolution. From his early medical training to his fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Baselga was at the forefront of translational research. There, he contributed to the development and clinical use of Trastuzumab, one monoclonal antibody directed against cellular proteins associated with breast cancer, demonstrating its remarkable benefits in patients with advanced breast cancer. Upon returning to the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona and later during his leadership roles at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and again at Memorial Sloan Kettering, Baselga advanced evidence-based studies that reshaped the treatment paradigm for breast cancer, offering patients longer survival with significantly improved quality of life. Following his departure from Memorial Sloan Kettering due to disclosure-related issues, he became Chief Medical Officer at AstraZeneca, further accelerating the development of innovative cancer therapies. Josep Baselga dedicated his career to the vision of making cancer a manageable chronic disease—and ultimately, to defeating it. His work and legacy continue to inspire the global oncology community.
