Pío del Río Hortega: Discoverer of the Oligodendroglia and Microglia and the First Histogenic Classification of Central Nervous System
摘要
Pío del Río Hortega (1882–1945), a prominent Spanish neuroscientist, made significant contributions to the understanding of the central nervous system, particularly through his work on the third element, the glia. Born in 1882 in Portillo, Valladolid, he initially struggled to join Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s team but later excelled in neurohistology. His discovery and detailed study of microglia and oligodendroglia expanded the knowledge of neurosciences. Despite challenges, including political tensions and his eventual exile in Argentina, Río Hortega’s innovative techniques and research became essential in neurology. He has been two times candidate for the Nobel prize. Moreover his contributions on the Pathology of tumors in the Central Nervous System (CNS) are still used today. His career spanned Spain, France, the UK, and Argentina, has left a lasting global impact on medical science.
