Focusing on the scaffolding of problem solving by applying AI tools, this chapter first presents how this can be done in mathematics and science using expert systems, whose knowledge bases are developed by students who express the logic of solving specific problems in terms of if-then rules. Then, it describes a similar yet more accessible approach that calls for basic programming in an AI language called PROLOG. To this end, the process of solving related problems in school mathematics and physics is considered. Next, the criticism of this PROLOG-based approach is addressed. Suggestions for practice and research are included in the closing section.
