General Introduction
摘要
This introductory chapter outlines the aims, objectives, problem statement, scope, methodology, and theoretical frameworks of this academic inquiry. The research employs a qualitative and descriptive design, utilising both primary and secondary data gathered from the Banen community in the Littoral region of Cameroon, particularly during customary court proceedings. The theoretical framework is grounded in both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches. The multidisciplinary aspect incorporates three distinct fields: linguistics, law, and ethnography. Meanwhile, the interdisciplinary framework employs three analytical tools: multiplicity, relationality, and reflexivity. In other words, this research endeavour is focused on several critical objectives, including the preservation and analysis of the legal heritage of the Banen people. It explores the linguistic strategies used by traditional legal authorities to overcome language barriers in a judicial system that often lacks essential resources, such as legal interpreters. Additionally, this study seeks to raise awareness of the positive impact of customary law on indigenous communities, aiming to improve perceptions of this judicial system, which colonial ideologies have often shaped.
