This chapter introduces the subject of Predramatic Theatre and the approaches taken in this book. Citing the importance for students of performance history of Hans-Thies Lehmann’s book Postdramatic Theatre (published in English translation in 2006), it raises the possibility of a similar study of predramatic theatre, and how such an approach might galvanise research on performance in Britain before the proliferation of purpose-built theatres in the later sixteenth century. It briefly explores notions of the pre- and the post- in theatrical terms, and how looking at what characterises the postdramatic forms identified by Lehmann might also illuminate the study of the pre-theatrical, predramatic performance cultures of early-modern Britain.
