This chapter situates discourses of community college leadership within narratives of crisis and change in twentieth century capitalism. It describes two discourses of community college leadership. The first was paradoxically critique of bureaucracy and an affirmation of bureaucratic constraints on autocratic decision making. The second emerged alongside theories of transformational leadership and tasked community college leaders with implementing radical organizational reforms. The chapter resurfaces tensions between discourses of professional autonomy and discourses of transformational leadership.

摘要

This chapter situates discourses of community college leadership within narratives of crisis and change in twentieth century capitalism. It describes two discourses of community college leadership. The first was paradoxically critique of bureaucracy and an affirmation of bureaucratic constraints on autocratic decision making. The second emerged alongside theories of transformational leadership and tasked community college leaders with implementing radical organizational reforms. The chapter resurfaces tensions between discourses of professional autonomy and discourses of transformational leadership.
