This chapter defines leadership, so it encompasses what the non-specialist does in steering novel IT/AI solutions to challenges and problems. IT/AI developmental tasks are outlined for five career stages, bearing in mind some differences between clinicians and educators. Innovation and leadership are concepts that have much in common because both are concerned with inspiring and catalyzing others to achieve institutional mission by designing new ways of achieving long-held values. The imperative for leadership is to drive organizational innovation by fostering an environment that embraces and encourages the use of technology, including AI. Steps in the change process are discussed: establishing a need for the proposed change; assembling the group who will lead the effort; developing and communicating the plan; encouraging new behaviors and risk taking; communicating with stakeholders; implementing and evaluating changes made; hardwiring new systems; and celebrating successes.
