This chapter sets the stage of this book introducing the reader to Artificial and Human Intelligence with a special focus on medicine, nursing and healthcare in general. It shows that today’s AI is inextricably linked with the achievements of digitalization. Although AI is often used synonymously with machine learning, AI also embraces knowledge-based methods that dominated the early developments in the 1970ies. The chapter gives an overview of the spectrum of recent applications, expands on their promise to augment human capacities but also on their intrinsic risks. Bridging Human and Artificial Intelligence requires a good understanding of what both concepts mean and that they represent different realms. However, together they should spur changes and pave the avenue toward the betterment of care provision, patient safety, and patient empowerment.

摘要
