This introduction presents arguments in favor of an interdisciplinary approach to social essentialism involving anthropological and social psychological research. Different forms of essentialism, starting from Plato’s “Philosophy of Forms,” are discussed. We propose a sequence of conditions, capacities, and processes that may have been relevant to the potential long-term development of essentialism.
