In this chapter I broaden discussion of the place of both the theoretical and the empirical to explore the development of archaeology from 1960 to the present. In Chap. 8 the focus was firmly on the role of the theoretical in underwriting a transformation in disciplinary goals and perspectives. In this chapter I consider the impact of empirical discoveries as sources of new challenges to both archaeological theory and method.
