We present two complementary strategies to advance the wavefront shaping capabilities of flat optics: shape optimization for multi-objective functionality and improved efficiency in single-layer metasurfaces, and free-standing bilayer stacking to surpass limits in polarization control, complex modulation, and dispersion engineering.
