The authors report on the development and the role of psychosomatic medicine in medical care in Germany in the last 30 years. The discipline promotes qualification in integrated psychosomatic care via “psychosomatic primary care” and a specialist qualification in “Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy”. The latter combines somatic competence with a high level of psychotherapeutic competence. Specialists participate in the provision of care in outpatient, day care, and inpatient treatment, as well as rehabilitation, consultation-liaison services, collaboration with multi-professional teams, or cross-section care.
