Assessing Sleep Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
摘要
This chapter examines sleep in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Up to 80% of children with ASD have co-occurring sleep problems, and poor sleep has been associated with difficulties in autistic characteristics, cognition, mood, attention, behavior, and adaptive functioning. Sleep disorders in children with ASD include insomnia, sleep-related breathing disorders, parasomnias, rapid eye movement associated abnormalities, rhythmic movement disorders, and restless legs syndrome. Sleep surveys, sleep diaries, actigraphy, and polysomnography may be used to evaluate sleep problems. Assessment of sleep problems must also include a review of potential contributing medical factors. Helping children prepare for a successful sleep study often involves advance preparation and desensitization. Effective intervention strategies include behavioral sleep education and the use of exogenous melatonin.
