How can a genre of fiction tell us anything useful about a hypothetical area of science? In this particular case, the answer may be quite a lot. This chapter starts by defining different types of science fiction, before homing in on the more serious end of the spectrum. Several stories written in the early 1950s show how a paradigm shift—a term that didn’t even exist at the time—might lead to a workable theory of antigravity. While these stories might not tell us much about antigravity itself, they do have useful things to say about how such shifts occur. As to specific theories of antigravity, these range from H. G. Wells’s notion of a “gravity-screening” material to inertialess space drives and the cancellation of gravity through some form of rotational effect—all of which provide food for thought if not definitive answers. Finally, even the way antigravity is portrayed at a popular level in comics, movies and TV tells us something about the prejudices and expectations associated with it.
