Trump’s Impact on Shifts in the European Security and Defense Policy
摘要
This chapter examines Donald Trump’s approach to the European Union (EU) and NATO, highlighting its impact on transatlantic relations and European security. It shows how Trump’s presidency marked a shift from traditional US support for the Euro-Atlantic alliance, as he criticized the EU’s trade practices and NATO’s military spending, imposed tariffs, and questioned NATO’s value. This section demonstrates how this stance influenced European defense cooperation, exposing contradictions in initiatives like PESCO and the European Defence Fund, and underscoring Europe’s reliance on US security guarantees. The book argues that the realization of concepts like a “dormant NATO” promoted by MAGA strategists could dangerously increase Europe’s strategic vulnerability before it achieves strategic autonomy and credible deterrence.
