What does it take to create a sense of belonging on a university campus? Ripley Butterfield reflects on the value of student-led community engagement events to draw in campus members and create venues for creativity and knowledge exchange. Butterfield shares experiences that transformed her sense of connection as a university student. She describes speaking at an open mic event, Sound Your Truth, designed to amplify underrepresented voices on campus. Working together, students, faculty and staff held space where speakers felt comfortable to speak about their experiences, hopes, and dreams. At an Earth Day event Butterfield helped organize, she facilitated the creation of a zine library where community members published handmade mini booklets on social, environmental and economic sustainability topics.
