Two Political Science & International Relations programs improve inclusion, diversity, accessibility and equity in international and multilateral sustainability education. The SUNY Global Engagement Program in New York City and the United Nations Semester Course, taught at SUNY New Paltz, US are designed to give students the opportunity to become agents of change by building globally engaged careers towards a sustainable future. Students learn from experts at the United Nations, engage with community members, and participate directly in social change efforts through internships. The courses connect theory and practice through applied learning experiences and emphasize a “glass half full” perspective through discussions on social scientific knowledge about what has proven to work in the field. Students develop an understanding of their micro impact within their internships and locate this transformation in the larger global context. They practice, research, write and discuss peace, human rights, and sustainability based on the normative and legal ethical practices of states, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations. The programs foster global citizenship that aspires to global sustainability within a justice framework. Universities and organizations that do not enjoy proximity to United Nations centers may access these resources and encounters virtually.

The courses connect theory and practice through applied learning experiences and emphasize a “glass half full” perspective through discussions on social scientific knowledge about what has proven to work in the field. Students develop an understanding of their micro impact within their internships and locate this transformation in the larger global context.
