When Lisa Mitten first arrived on campus as the SUNY New Paltz Campus Sustainability Coordinator in 2013, she focused on thematic sustainability operational areas: materials/wastewaste, energy, water, and foodfood. As her first years on the job passed, she realized that hers wasn’t strictly an environmentally focused university. Then in 2015, the United NationsUnited Nations (UN) members agreed upon the seventeen Global GoalsGlobal Goals for Sustainable Development, which articulated the three environmental, social, and economiceconomics dimensions of sustainability and this helped her broaden campus views and aspirations. She convinced administrative leadership to invest in professional development for campus employees to learn about the three dimensions of sustainability. This funding sparked community engagement and innovative teaching that has continued to expand opportunities for faculty, staff and students with the creation of the Sustainability Faculty Learning Community and the student Sustainability Ambassadors programs. Mitten offers her Top 10 Sustainability Leadership Strategies with an emphasis on collaboration, listening, and building community.
