The formation of environmental citizenship is a process where existing structural conditions for citizenship formation interact with student and teachers’ agency and imagination. In this chapter, my starting point is how societal relations of power are present in schools, but schools are also formative for the societies they are part of. I use the concept of subject positions to discuss how the structural conditioning of citizenship identity formation and explore the role of narratives in education to better understand the potential of forming environmental citizenship identities. Through narrative, different dimensions of life and society are woven together and constitute reality as we know it. Teaching can give students access to new stories, and to exemplify this, I use social movements as an example of how people have actually managed to work together as citizens to bring about social change.
