Accelerating the Transition to Clean Energy for Creating a Just and Equitable Climate Future in Sub-Saharan Africa
摘要
The transition to clean energy is one of the global agendas that has been embedded in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7. Achieving this goal is considered a crucial step towards achieving other goals, such as SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 1 (No Poverty), and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 2. Nevertheless, developing countries, particularly sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, still lag in the transition to clean energy as they still rely mostly on fossil fuels, which threaten environmental and human health. This chapter employs secondary data sources to describe the latest advancements in clean energy technologies, the economic feasibility of emerging clean energy technologies, and the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in driving the clean energy transition and potential policy innovations to stimulate investment in clean energy technologies in SSA. The chapter shows that SSA has great potential to transition to clean energy due to the abundant clean energy resources found in this region. The realisation of this potential would help to combat the impacts of climate change, generate employment, and create a sustainable future.
