The Impact of COVID-19 on Global Food Value Chains
摘要
The COVID-19 pandemic has severely disrupted global food value chains, revealing the vulnerabilities of food production, processing, distribution, and consumption systems. This chapter examines the varied impacts of the pandemic on food value chains globally. The key findings highlight that movement restrictions, labour shortages, and heightened logistical costs led to supply chain disruptions, resulting in delays in food imports and increased price volatility during the pandemic. In developing regions such as Africa, the impact of the challenges worsened pre-existing food security concerns. The chapter highlights the importance of diversified supply chains, increased regional cooperation, and investments in resilient food systems to reduce the long-term effects of such global crises.’ To enhance resilience in food systems, there is a need for diversification of crop production, strengthening local production and markets, climate-smart practices, and technological innovations such as precision agriculture.
