Supplements and Drugs for Health and Longevity: Recommendations, Conclusions and Challenges
摘要
In this concluding chapter, the strength of evidence), and possible recommendations, for supplements and drugs are summarized, particularly focusing on the human usage. An analysis of all the chapters included in this book shows that although there is a lot of important scientific information available from studies performed on cell culture- and animal-based model systems, SOE from human studies is generally weak due to the limitations of the study design, sample size, limited number of studies, and inconsistent results among independent studies. Therefore, in order to recommend and promote the use of single or multiple supplements and drugs by human beings, much more reliable scientific evidence is still needed, especially with respect to the biomarkers of ageing, health and lifespan. An unconditional and excessive use of the so-called supplements and drugs for achieving a longer and healthier lifespan is presently nothing more than wishful thinking and a marketing tool.
