Natural Healthy-Aging Agents: Wisdom from Traditional Chinese Medicine
摘要
Historically, one of the highest ideals of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was to use herbs to prevent disease and promote health and longevity. A variety of TCM theories provide a foundation for understanding the physiological basis for the aging process, and in turn therapeutic strategies, practices, and herbs for maximizing our health potential throughout the duration of our lives. There is a plethora of modern research supporting the healthy-aging potential of many botanicals used in TCM. Some contain compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory or immune modulatory activities, all of which are generally positively correlated with healthy aging. Others positively affect telomeres, DNA repair, RNA expression, mitochondrial health, cognitive function, and the microbiome of the gut, all of which are foundational to health aging. This paper addresses the underlying diagnostic constructs for understanding the aging process, introduces readers to some of the primary herbs used in TCM for supporting healthy aging, and provides references to scientific evidence supporting these effects.
