Historical Perspective: Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) Research and Its Significance
摘要
As aUrban Heat Islands (UHIs) result of rapid urbanizationUrbanization and infrastructure development, urban areas tend to have a lower albedo and higher land surface temperaturesLand-surface temperature compared to their surrounding rural areas. This phenomenon is called the urban heat islandUrban Heat Islands (UHIs) (UHI) effectUrban heat island effect. Scientists have understood this concept since the early nineteenth century. The quantification of the UHI effectUrban heat island effect can be done either by measuring LSTLand-surface temperature or atmospheric temperature. Most of the studies on historical development of UHIs have been done based on LSTLand-surface temperature variations, air temperature measurements, and numerical modeling. The present study investigated the historical evolution of UHI research in terms of its definition, causes, effects, and mitigation. In addition, key developments in UHIUrban Heat Islands (UHIs) research over time are also discussed.
