Policy Implications of Integrating Remote Sensing Data into Urban Policy and Planning

This paper looks at how geospatial technologies—like satellite imagery, remote sensingRemote sensing, and GIS—can play a powerful role in helping cities become more liveable, sustainable, and better prepared for the future. While India has made progress in adopting digital tools, many challenges remain. Urban data is often scattered across different government departments, legal rules for data sharing are unclear, and local authorities frequently lack the training or tools to make the most of geospatial systems. To understand how things can improve, this study draws insights from both Indian policy documents and successful examples from other parts of the world, like Singapore’s Smart Nation strategy and Barcelona’s climate-focused city planning. These global cases show what’s possible when technology, good governance, and community involvement come together. The paper offers practical suggestions tailored to India’s context, such as updating urban master plans with satellite data, encouraging public–private partnerships, building open data platforms for city-level information, and strengthening data privacy laws. It also stresses the need to train city officials and planners to use these tools effectively. Ultimately, the research highlights that geospatial technologies shouldn’t just be seen as technical upgrades; there are tools for making urban development more inclusive, transparent, and forward-thinking. With the right policies and a commitment to collaboration, India can use these tools to build cities that work better for everyone.
