This chapter discusses the recourse of a prominent Yoruba playwright to proverbs in the play Madam Tinubu, highlighting how the genre continues to function as a living, vigorous, and current rhetorical device, for transmission of the moral wisdom, for delineation of characters, and illumination of plots in modern drama. Proverbs are used among the Yoruba people to embellish and support arguments during conversation and oratory events. This is what Akinwumi Iṣọla has done in the play examined here where he creatively weaves proverbs into the discourse of his characters to recreate the experiences of his people. The study reveals how the playwright pleasantly surprises his readers through inventive use of proverbs: piling them up for emphasis, introducing creative twists, transforming them into questions, explaining some proverbs, modifying their structures, and narrating proverbial stories.
