Private companies, at least in Western countries, have been involved in spaceflight since the early days of the Space Age. NASA and other civil space agencies, along with militaries, have hired contractors to build launchLaunch vehicles, satellites, and other systems needed for national programs. Over the decades, other companies have emerged to use those capabilities for commercial purposes, primarily in communications.
