This chapter argues for informed consent to the use of AI in health care when various conditions are met. It justifies requiring informed consent using several lines of reasoning: it is a familiar tool in medicine. Clinicians and researchers understand its basic requirements. Consumers want to know when AI is used. AI’s use may impact their decision making. Some healthcare consumers would not know to ask about it in many circumstances—they have no idea it might be used. And clinicians may defer to AI recommendations and overly rely on it due to automation bias. Consumers of healthcare may be vulnerable due to illness or socioeconomic positioning. Informed consent promotes trust; a failure to disclose the use of AI may even be deceitful. A lack of informed consent could increase the risk of liability. Informed consent errs on the side of respect for the healthcare consumer.

摘要
