Informed consent in medicine is always two-directional—the recipient of the information consents to or rejects the surgical procedure, drug, or other medical intervention. Informed consent is a handshake while transparency is an announcement. This chapter describes the types of disclosures necessary to achieve transparency, the limits of transparency, and the differences between transparency and explainability.

This chapter focuses on the AI principle of transparency. Transparency is generally one-directional as a principle. Informed consent in medicine is always two-directional—the recipient of the information consents to or rejects the surgical procedure, drug, or other medical intervention.
