What Is Behind the “Cancel Russia” Attitude
摘要
This chapter develops an explanation of the Cancel Russia attitude. It discusses the historical tensions between Russia and Western nations, building on the literature on (mis)perceptions before, during, and after the Cold War. It also analyzes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the broader context of the Russo-Ukrainian and Russo-Western conflict after the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. While historical tensions constituted the roots of Western fears of Russia, the invasion of Ukraine became the enabling condition responsible for the rise of the Western Russia hawks, activating the passively held fears in various Western circles. Finally, the chapter identifies specific networks of social/political actors initiating and promoting the attitude to defeat Russia as a great power, state, and culture. The chapter discusses different groups with diverse yet compatible agendas, including the preservation of Western global hegemony at the expense of downgrading Russia, transforming its political system, and dismembering its territory into several states.
