Flash floodsFlash floods have recently posed a significant threat to the communities and infrastructure in the SylhetSylhet Division, Bangladesh. This chapter focuses on monitoring multiple flash flood events in this area that occurred from 2017 to 2022 and analyzing their impacts using multi-temporal Sentinel-1 SARSentinel-1 SAR VH and VV backscatteredVH and VV backscatter and Sentinel-2 MSISentinel-2 MSI images. At the initial stage, the analyses focused on identifying changes in flood scenarios at three different levels (before, during, and after) in the Sunamganj district in 2022, and both Sunamganj and SylhetSylhet districts flooding in 2017 and 2019, respectively. Thereafter, flood inundation and comprehensive flood maps were prepared to know their spatial extent and severity. Moreover, an overlay analysis was performed with the land cover and flood inundation data, along with multi-temporal SAR backscatter comparisons were made for different flood stages change monitoring. To validate the changes, important meteorological parameters such as precipitation, soil moistureSoil moisture, and both surface and subsurface runoff were analyzed and identified their significant impact on flood occurrences. The findings of this chapter will help to assess the effectiveness of flood monitoring strategies through geospatial techniques and further contribute to disaster preparedness and mitigationMitigation efforts in the SylhetSylhet division.
