Impacts of Extension and Advisory Services on Commercial Agriculture and Livelihoods Among Smallholder Farmers in Rural Malawi
摘要
This chapter delves into the significance of extension and advisory services in promoting agricultural commercialisation and improving livelihood of smallholder farmers in rural Malawi. The underlying premise is that access to such services can enhance farmers’ efficiency, encourage the adoption of advanced technologies, and expand their knowledge and skills, ultimately leading to increased production and surplus for sale. Moreover, these services play a crucial role in shaping farmers decision-making processes, enabling them to make informed choices regarding enterprises and adopt market-based farming approaches, resulting in a transformation of their attitudes and perceptions. Numerous studies have showcased how access to extension and advisory services positively impacts food security, boosts household incomes, and enhances overall welfare. To investigate this further, the chapter adopts a mixed-method research design, combining qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data was collected through focus group discussions (6) and key informant interviews (11), and quantitative data involving 126 households was collected using household survey. Qualitative data was analysed using thematic content analysis and quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics, employing statistical measures such as means, percentages, cross-tabulation, correlations, chi-square tests, and Analysis of Variance. Findings show that despite the anticipated contributions of extension and advisory services, their actual impact in driving commercial agriculture is limited. Other critical factors such as access to land, labour, and capital, as well as the policy and marketing environment, and weather conditions, play significant roles in influencing commercial agriculture and determining livelihoods. These factors remain beyond the scope of extension and advisory services.
