The Way of Companionship
摘要
The complexity of distress and despair cannot be addressed by mental health professionals alone, nor by an investment in one siloed program or another. Our collective response requires a well-coordinated, multi-layered effort, anchored in our neighborhoods and local communities. Companionship, our first pathway to mental health, is a set of five practices and an introductory three-hour training that equips family members, friends and neighbors, fellow students, and work colleagues to be present and share in the healing journey. Lay volunteers, supported by regular group meetings, come alongside a person in distress, build a basic supportive connection, and support an individual in building a team of care, recovery, and wellness. The origins of the model, how it contributes to healing and recovery, and the relational outreach and engagement theory which informs companionship are provided.
