Citizen Roles
摘要
In human evolutionary terms, collaborating towards a joint goal has created a new kind of social engagement, a joint intentionality in which “we” (whether hunting antelopes or raiding a neighbouring village), with “my” own interdependent role together with yours produce a dual-level structure of simultaneous sharedness and individuality—a joint goal but with individual roles. This calls for relational thinking by functional categories—a uniquely human form of second-personal joint engagement requiring species unique cognitive skills and motivational propensities. Humans have become exceptional at this by creating role-based categories such as archer, runner, wife, teacher, beneficiary, expert, and so on as part of some larger activity. Roles for humans are essentially cognitive divisions of labour. The evolution of ideas is similar to evolution itself in that it follows a draw-back-to-leap pattern. Applying the two main proposed citizen roles of “critical thinker” and “learner” to decision-making results in a draw-back critically in conversation to leap forward creatively in dialogue strategy.
