Prologue and Other Firsts
摘要
This chapter uses the analogy of a camera to explain the importance of considering different perspectives—from the most broad to the most focused and the analogy of a photograph to explain granularity—from the most sketchy to the most detailed views. It suggests that jointly addressing an issue by visual and verbal means creates a useful mixed-scanning mode which is underpinned by human biology. Whether in science, mathematics, economics, politics, or philosophy the guiding influence of firsts may be found in definitions, axioms, assumptions, biases, fallacies, hypotheses, theories, propositions, methodologies, and ideologies to name a few. Firsts set paths, frequently unpredictably so. The ultimate root source of greater understanding is the study of human thought itself as the first first. Consequently, acknowledgement and careful consideration of relevant firsts is a must if correct paths are to be embarked upon, starting from human evolution.
