This chapter summarizes the academic challenges faced by autistic students without intellectual disability, indicating that they are frequently expected to meet the same standards as their non-autistic peers. However, key difficulties for autistic people include reading comprehension and writing, with struggles in organizing thoughts, translating ideas into written forms, and maintaining narrative coherence due to higher-order cognitive challenges. Arithmetic abilities present mixed results, but significant challenges have been revealed in word problem-solving. The research on academic achievement in autism is limited, highlighting the need for more extensive and controlled studies that carefully consider factors such as sample characteristics and assessment methods. Understanding the mechanisms of academic achievement in autism is crucial for developing effective interventions. Future research should explore how core challenges of autism, including social engagement, emotional and motivational factors, and general cognitive functions, contribute to learning difficulties of autistic students. This may help to enhance intervention plans for autistic children with learning difficulties, ultimately meeting the complex needs of these learners.

摘要
