Diversity in Communication
摘要
This chapter explores the intersection of diversity and communication in organizations. It begins by defining diversity across multiple dimensions including demographic, trait-based, experiential, and value-based, and outlines the organizational benefits of fostering inclusive environments, including improved learning, fairness, and decision-making. Special attention is given to generational diversity, highlighting distinct communication and work style preferences among Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z. The chapter then transitions to communication theory, presenting three models: the sender–receiver model, the co-orienting model, and conversational learning. It addresses the challenges posed by big data and the growing use of AI in organizational communication, noting both efficiency and perception concerns. The importance of information literacy is emphasized for navigating complex communication environments. Finally, the chapter presents a five-step framework for developing and targeting messages, including identifying purpose, storytelling, and tailoring content to diverse audiences. These strategies enhance clarity, trust, and inclusivity in workplace communication.
