Games With A Purpose (GWAPs) for linguistic annotation often struggle to sustain engagement. We investigate whether puzzles and emojis enhance engagement in a word-sense disambiguation (WSD) task. Participants completed three within-subject conditions: (1) puzzles with emojis, (2) puzzles, and (3) annotation alone. Novices found visual cues motivating; experts preferred streamlined tasks. A reflexive thematic analysis revealed distinct preferences regarding puzzle complexity, visual aids, and perceived cognitive load.

摘要

Games With A Purpose (GWAPs) for linguistic annotation often struggle to sustain engagement. We investigate whether puzzles and emojis enhance engagement in a word-sense disambiguation (WSD) task. Participants completed three within-subject conditions: (1) puzzles with emojis, (2) puzzles, and (3) annotation alone. Novices found visual cues motivating; experts preferred streamlined tasks. A reflexive thematic analysis revealed distinct preferences regarding puzzle complexity, visual aids, and perceived cognitive load.
