This chapter provides an overview of the joint semantic-channel coding framework that integrates both analog and digital semantic communication paradigms. Analog semantic communication directly maps semantic representations into continuous constellation points, which can achieve efficient transmission but also introduce considerable challenges for practical implementation, such as robustness to channel noise, hardware constraints, and difficulties in standardization. To address these limitations, digital semantic communication frameworks are introduced, in which semantic features are discretized and encoded in a digital manner. This digital extension enables seamless compatibility with existing digital communication infrastructures, while preserving the task-oriented characteristics of semantic information. By combining analog and digital schemes, the joint semantic-channel coding framework provides a flexible solution to balance efficiency, robustness, and practicality. Furthermore, this chapter discusses design considerations, implementation challenges, and potential applications of the joint framework, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical advances in semantic communication and its deployment in real-world systems.

摘要
