The first generation (1G) enabled analog voice services, followed by the digital leap of 2G and the mobile data era of 3G. With 4G came the smartphone revolution, powering mobile applications, video streaming, and social networking. The arrival of 5G further expanded capabilities with ultra-high-speed connectivity, low latency, and massive device integration, supporting applications from autonomous driving to industrial automation. Looking ahead, 6G promises to deliver not only faster speeds but also intelligent, adaptive, and multimodal services through the integration of artificial intelligence. A key paradigm shift is semantic communication, which focuses on transmitting and interpreting meaning rather than raw data, reducing redundancy and aligning communication with task requirements. This chapter reviews the historical evolution of wireless systems and introduces the emerging techniques that will shape efficient, intelligent communication in the 6G era.
