As a nurse and nurse practitioner who has worked in a department of surgery for over 2 decades, trends and shifts in culture as it relates to females in medicine and women surgeons are inevitable. However, bias ingrained in systems may be difficult to change. Although changes for the better in many career aspects have occurred, more work is still needed to ensure women surgeons are supported and advanced.

As a nurse and nurse practitioner who has worked in a department of surgery for over 2 decades, trends and shifts in culture as it relates to females in medicine and women surgeons are inevitable. However, bias ingrained in systems may be difficult to change. Although changes for the better in many career aspects have occurred, more work is still needed to ensure women surgeons are supported and advanced.
