Academic surgery offers unique opportunities not only to treat diseases but also to address the social and structural determinants of health. Privileges of a surgical career—especially in trauma—can be leveraged for advocacy at the individual, institutional, and policy levels. Through examples from clinical practice and professional societies, surgeons are well-positioned to drive meaningful change and should view advocacy as integral to their mission.
