The Neoliberal University: 2001–2020
摘要
This chapter considers twenty-first-century student organizing in Canada against the backdrop of entrenched neoliberalism, the War on Terror, the climate crisis, and the resurgence of the far-right. It outlines campaigns opposed to austerity and inaccessible postsecondary education, militarism, imperialism, and Islamophobia; institutional complicity with the fossil fuel industry; and the rise of right-wing reactionaries. It demonstrates: (1) the ongoing belief, by many, that students and universities could act as agents of social change; (2) the grounding of campaigns in hegemonic rhetoric; (3) the efforts to influence both the local environment and broader society; (4) the continued use of both “proper channels” and mass mobilizations; (5) the increasingly repressive response from neoliberal institutions; and (6) the ability of student movements to influence internal and external discussions and debates.
