In this chapter, we present an original synthesis of the theoretical and conceptual findings outlined in previous chapters. This forms the foundation for our operational approach to identifying and characterizing the functioning of inner peripheriesInner peripheries as applied in the empirical analysis conducted in this study. The starting point for these findings is the set of assumptions underpinning our triangulated theoretical-methodological-narrative framework. This framework integrates the concept of geographical peripherality, the theory of the Modern World SystemModern World System, the concept of organized proximity, the foundational economyFoundational Economy approach, and the theory of spatial justiceSpatial Justice in a territorial dimension. These perspectives are utilized to define and explain the functioning dynamics of inner peripheries. Based on this theoretical foundation and our interpretation of inner peripheries, we outline the operational concretization of these assumptions applied in our research methodology. This includes the spatial framework for delimiting inner peripheries, the analytical framework characterizing their condition and transformations, and the role we assign to inner peripheries in addressing the challenges of development policy programming in response to the consequences of development shocks. Our findings enable us to present a theoretical-conceptual modelTheoretical-conceptual model and the assumptions for its empirical operationalization, which serve as the basis for the research methodology adopted in this study. This methodology aims to identify, classify, and characterize the functioning of inner peripheries while considering the impact of development shocks, particularly those arising from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
